about

traditional - scottish. it was collected and subsequently modified by robert burns (to whom this song is often attributed). different sources say that it was either penned, however, by poet isobel pagan (1741-1821) or reverend john clunie (1759-1819).

lyrics

call the yowes tae the knowes
call them where the heather grows
call them where the burnie rolls
my bonnie dearie.

as I went down the water side
there I met my shepherd lad
he rolled me sweetly in his plaid
and he called me his dearie

will you go down the water side
to see the waves so sweetly glide
beneath the hazels spreading wide
the moon it shines full clearly

you shall have gowns and ribbons meet
calf leather shoes upon your feet
and in my arms you'll lie and sleep
and you shall be my dearie

if you'll but stand to what you said
I'll go with you my shepherd lad
and you may roll me in your plaid
and I shall be your dearie

while waters wimple to the sea
while day blinks in the sky so high
til clay cold death shall blind my eye
you shall be my dearie

call the yowes tae the knowes
call them where the heather grows
call them where the burnie rolls
my bonnie dearie.
